This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

George Washington On The Indispensable Supports Of Free Government

George Washington

Quoting George Washington (“Father of Our Country”):

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of man and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked, “Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation deserts the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice?”

And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. It is substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who, that is a sincere friend to it, can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric? (Source: George Washington, Address of George Washington, President of the United States . . . Preparatory to His Declination (Baltimore: George and Henry S. Keating), pp. 22-23. In his Farewell Address to the United States in 1796.)

The American Culture Of Narcissism

Dr. Ross Porter, licensed Clinical Psychologist, is the founder and Executive Director of Stillpoint Family Resources. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology) and M.Div. (Master of Divinity) degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he first became interested in the integration of psychology and spirituality. Dr. Porter writes and presents workshops and seminars on issues dealing with psychology and spirituality. He has created the The Virtue Project, a unique and practical vision of healing and hope that integrates psychological truth with theological and philosophical wisdom. The following excerpt is from Dr. Porter’s article on “Reclaiming Virtue and Wisdom”:

There was a time when reality-testing was a hallmark of good mental health. The presumption was that a psychologically well person could distinguish between what was objectively good behavior and what was inappropriate; what was natural and what was unnatural; what was creative and what was destructive. Psychologically unhealthy people, in contrast, struggled consistently with making these same kinds of fundamental discernments. Responsibilities, both to self and others, were understood and taken seriously. Duty was not a four-letter word, and giving back was not the punch line of a joke.

We need no Gallup poll to confirm current American culture is not our grandparent’s generation. The increasingly self-indulgent, secularized, nihilistic America that followed The Great Depression and World War II has left our culture both psychologically immature and morally confused about meaning and purpose. Like never before in America, subjectivity is becoming the sole source of both reality and truth. And there’s the problem, pure subjectivity does not provide a shared standard for judging reality or truth.

How does this exhibit in our culture? Americans increasingly fall prey to a phenomenon known as the “self-serving bias”, exhibiting a reliable tendency to interpret events in ways that are favorable to them, or show them in the best possible light; even when objective facts don’t justify these judgments. So all successes are attributed to me, but all failures are blamed on others. If I get the job it’s because I’m wonderful, but if I don’t it’s because I was discriminated against. If I stay with my wife it’s because I’m wonderful, but if I leave it’s because she wasn’t meeting my needs. If my son excels in school it’s because he’s my son and I’m wonderful, but if he rebels it’s because of the school. This is consistent with what Paul Vitz has called “selfism”, and what Christopher Lasch has called “the culture of narcissism.”

Secular Progressive Fascism

In The Philosophy of Fascism, written in 1936, Mario Palmeiri writes, “Fascist ethics begin…with the acknowledgment that it is not the individual who confers a meaning upon society, but it is, instead, the existence of a human society which determines the human character of the individual. According to Fascism, a true, a great spiritual life cannot take place unless the State has risen to a position of pre-eminence in the world of man. The curtailment of liberty thus becomes justified at once, and this need of rising the State to its rightful position.”

Don’t give me that “oh, but he was writing about Fascism! That’s right wing, not left wing!” nonsense. Fascism is merely socialism light. It is a system of private ownership of the means of production, with government control. The German fascists of World War 2 were self proclaimed big-government socialists. Does that sound right wing to you? (P.96 of Neal Boortz‘s book, The Terrible Truth About Liberals)

The Driving Force Of The Secular Left

Photographed and uploaded to English Wikipedia...

Results of the Leftist Agenda

Secular progressives are driven by the desire to force their own intellectual vision of what is good for the rest of us on our country by any means.  They do not hesitate to slander the character of those who oppose their agenda.  It is most interesting that their attacks are in the form of vilifications that are more appropriately useful descriptions of their own movement.  For instance, Chris Hedges claims in his book, American Fascists:

“The radical Christian Right calls for exclusion, cruelty and intolerance in the name of God. Its members do not commit evil for evil’s sake. They commit evil to make a better world. To attain this better world, they believe, some must suffer and be silenced and destroyed. The worst suffering in human history has been carried out by those who preach such grand, utopian visions, those who seek to implant by force their narrow, particular version of goodness.” (Chris Hedges, American Fascists, p. 205)

It is a fact that Hedges’ claims are more typical of modern liberal philosophy than they are of modern Christian conservativism.  Liberals seem to always desire to characterize Christianity as one of the negative influences in this world.  If they had been taught history correctly, they would have learned that it is where and when Christianity is absent that the greatest crimes against humanity are carried out.  As Fyodor Dostoevsky said, “Without God and the future life?  How will man be after that?  It means everything is permitted now.”

The Darwinist-atheism of Stalin resulted in the deaths of 20 million people or more to create the soviet communist utopia.  Atheist Chairman Mao was responsible for the deaths of some 70 million Chinese for his utopian People’s Republic.  Anti-Jewish and anti-Christian followers of Hitler’s atheistic eugenics program slaughtered 10 million people in the name of “survival of the fittest” and for the Nazi utopia.  Jonah Goldberg points out in his excellent book, Liberal Fascism, that the roots of fascism are also found in 20th century American liberal thought and continue to this day.  This is important to understand because communism and fascism are two peas in the same socialist pod (not opposites).

Between 1975 and 1979, Pol Pot – in the interest of purifying Cambodia for his communist utopia – exterminated one-fifth of the population of that country.  Atrocities, committed (wrongly) in the name of Christianity during the last twenty centuries, are miniscule in comparison to the magnitude of evil committed by secular socialism in the twentieth century alone.  Yet, we choose not to remember that Hitler and Mussolini’s fascist policies were popular with the secular progressives prior to World War II.

It is the radical secular atheist who knows no moral boundaries for indoctrinating people to his cause.  Psychologist Nicholas Humphrey advocates that just as Amnesty International works to liberate political prisoners, teachers should seek to undermine the religious instruction given to children by their parents.  Philosopher Richard Rorty warns parents sending their children to college, “We are going to go right on trying to discredit you in the eyes of your children, trying to strip your fundamentalist religious community of dignity, trying to make your views seem silly rather than discussable.”

Did someone above mention “exclusion” and “intolerance?”  Talk about implanting by force a “narrow, particular version of goodness” – “brain-washing” is a better description of what these professors want to do.  This is modern day liberal fascism.  Isn’t it amazing that these radical socialist professors have deceived us into paying them to destroy the Christian beliefs and moral values of our sons and daughters?  In 1932, H. G. Wells told the Young Liberals club at Oxford that they must become “liberal fascists” and “enlightened Nazis.”  The secular left in our country continues to pursue these goals.

How One Communist Helped To Rewrite The History Taught In America’s Schools

Howard Zinn Speaking at Marlboro College - 02/...

Howard Zinn

One example of the secular progressives’ attempt to rewrite (distort) American History is Howard Zinn’s book, A People’s History of the United States. The book has been used in high schools and universities more for its propaganda appeal to America’s elite than its historical accuracy. Historian and author John Fea said Zinn’s book “is bad history” and “violates virtually every rule of good historical thinking.” Howard Zinn was also a member of the Communist Party-USA. According to Wes Vernon:

Hate America Howie (HAH) taught a class on “Basic Marxism” at party headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., advising his “students” that the basic teachings of Marx and Lenin “were sound and should be adhered to by those present”; HAH was a pro-Castro activist and backed radical groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Socialist Workers Party (SWP), Progressive Labor Party, and Black Panther Party; supported a Communist victory in Vietnam, visiting the Communist regime in Hanoi (ala “Hanoi Jane” Fonda — who — BTW — paid tribute to Howie upon his departure); in 1962, while President John F. Kennedy warned the Soviets to back off or suffer the consequences, HAH — at his quisling best — publicly protested the U.S. demand for withdrawal of missiles from Cuba. . . .

The guts of HAH’s “history” is that the founders were bad; the people who built the USA and made it the greatest nation on earth — complete with all its blessings — were evil; capitalism is to blame for everything; every war we ever fought including World War II was conducted either for imperialist ends or to cover our hypocrisy. If the 100 million people who were killed by world Communism could speak, they would be puzzled by Hate-America Howie’s affinity for the murderous movement that has stalked the world for decades. . . .

Before Communist Howard Zinn died in January, he was actively spearheading an effort to inject his lying version of American history into the innocent heads of little tots almost as soon as they are able to talk. . . .

Mr. Zinn’s polemic A People’s History of the United States (widely circulated in academia) did not mention that its author had been a dedicated member of the Communist Party USA, whose overall mission included the overthrow of the United States by force and violence (while attempting to achieve the same ends by infiltrating influential American institutions and occupations (such as — well, authoring “history” textbooks). . . .

Forget historical honesty — only the agenda counts

“Even if [objectivity] were possible, it would be undesirable,” he once remarked, “because if you have some kind of social aim, if you think history should serve society in some way; should serve the progress of the human race, then it requires that you make your selection on the basis of what you think will advance the causes of humanity” [even if such selectivity constitutes lying through one’s teeth?]. . . .

The People’s History tells us a lot about Howard Zinn.

Zinn wants our kids to grow up hating America because he says greed has motivated the United States in everything it has done during its relatively short history. These include our revolt against Britain in 1776, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II. All were done for evil profits.

All Must Submit To Islam

6 World Trade Center

It is well documented that Iran was founded on the principles of Islamic Totalitarianism and is a full-fledged militant Islamic theocracy. Iran is also a leading supporter of the terrorist groups Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah. The next leading state supporter of Islamic Totalitarianism is Saudi Arabia. It has spent more than seventy-five billion dollars to promote the Wahhabi sect of Islam. The Wahhabi sect inspires legions of Islamic Totalitarians, including Osama Bin Laden. What is the purpose of these disciples of Islamic Totalitarians? Yaron Brook and Alex Epstein write:

To conjure up the emotions we felt on 9/11, many intellectuals claim, is dangerous, because it promotes the “simplistic” desire for revenge and casts aside the “complexity” of the factors that led to the 9/11 attacks. But, in fact, the desire for overwhelming retaliation most Americans felt after 9/11—and feel rarely, if ever, now—was the result of an objective conviction: that a truly monstrous evil had been perpetrated, and that if the enemies responsible for the 9/11 attacks were not dealt with decisively, we would suffer the same fate (or worse) again.

After 9/11, our leaders—seemingly sharing our conviction in the necessity of decisive retaliation—promised to do everything possible to make America safe from terrorist attack. . . .

To fulfill the promise to defeat the terrorist enemy that struck on 9/11, our leaders would first have to identify who exactly that enemy is and then be willing to do whatever is necessary to defeat him. . . .

Who is the enemy that attacked on 9/11? It is not “terrorism”—just as our enemy in World War II was not kamikaze strikes or U-boat attacks. Terrorism is a tactic employed by a certain group for a certain cause. That group and, above all, the cause they fight for are our enemy.

The group that threatens us with terrorism—the group of which Al Qaeda is but one terrorist faction—is a militant, religious, ideological movement best designated as “Islamic Totalitarianism.” The Islamic Totalitarian movement, which enjoys widespread and growing support throughout the Arab–Islamic world, encompasses those who believe that all must live in total subjugation to the dogmas of Islam and who conclude that jihad (“holy war”) must be waged against those who refuse to do so. Islamic Totalitarians regard the freedom, prosperity, and pursuit of worldly happiness animating the West (and especially America and Israel) as the height of depravity. They seek to eradicate Western Culture, first in the Middle East and then in the West itself, with the ultimate aim of bringing about the worldwide triumph of Islam. This goal is achievable, adherents of the movement believe, because the West is a “paper tiger” that can be brought to its knees by sufficiently devoted Islamic warriors.

Is Your Teenager Really Ready For College?

Liberal college professors, who were anti-Christian and anti-America, were around even when I was a student in the late 1960’s. There did not seem to be as many, however, who were as aggressively vocal in so many areas of life as there are today.

Yes, I did attend a Christian college and university, but there were former ministers there who did not believe much of the Bible and were vocal in saying so. There were also professors who were politically left of center and wore their opinions like a badge of honor. There were political conservatives on the faculties as well. There were quite a few professors from Cuba who had escaped Fidel Castro’s communist revolution on that island. One of my core professors was an east European Christian who had survived a Nazi concentration camp during World War II and the communist take-over of his country afterwards.

Regardless of political persuasion, I remember my professors in both schools as being tolerant of disagreement and debate. Today, this is no longer true in higher education. Ridicule and personal verbal (sometimes violent) attacks have replaced reason and argument in settling differences of opinion. The secular-progressive agenda now dominates most college campuses because liberal, socialist professors have, over the years, become the overwhelming majority of teachers in these educational institutions. Their agenda has changed substantially the content of what is being taught and encouraged revisionism to run amuck. This should be enough to give concerned parents pause in the selection of Johnny’s college. David Limbaugh gives parents insight into what they may expect:

You know the drill. The professorate will aggressively beat into your children’s heads that America is not the greatest nation in history, but largely responsible, through action or inaction, for much of the suffering in the world and that it is imperialistic, exploitive and selfish. They’ll say that Christianity is narrow, intolerant, anti-intellectual, anti-science, homophobic, hateful and judgmental and that capitalism is corrupt and skewed toward the “rich” and big corporations. They’ll say or imply that political conservatism is inherently racist, homophobic, sexist, militaristic, unenlightened, close-minded, mean-spirited and uncompassionate. . . .

Christian parents should not assume their kids are equipped to filter out the false claims they will likely encounter. Christianity is the opposite of how it is often portrayed in our culture and is none of those negative things indicated above. You owe it to yourselves and your kids to anticipate the attacks and think through how they can be countered. Don’t assume your excellent child rearing will be enough. We must stand up to the challenge and test our own faith, if necessary, reviewing what and why we believe. If we can’t explain it, should we expect our kids to understand it?
