This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

THE GOSPEL SEED

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” (Mark 4:26-29 ESV)

How do we make Jesus known to the world? The parable above guides us in this regard. In order to make Him known, we must sow the words of Jesus Christ. The words of Jesus are the promise of salvation.

Christian men and women carry the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. They go sowing the seeds of gospel truth. The seeds are the words found in the Bible. Without these words, no one will repent and believe. The Holy Spirit creates new life by the gospel seed. This parable is given to remind us that the growth we desire from the word-seeds is in the Hands of God. However, we are called by God to do the sowing while the Holy Spirit causes the growth.

What do we learn from this parable? The Kingdom of God grows by spreading the seeds of truth spoken by Jesus. We have been given the honor of spreading these seeds so that the world will know the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians are seed-bearers while God gives life and growth to the seeds. Therefore, plant generously and prepare for the harvest.
