This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)

In this verse is one of the great mysteries that theologians and believers have argued about for centuries. How far do man’s will and God’s sovereignty go in determining the salvation of the Christian?

Salvation is certainly a demonstration of God’s glory. We know that God is absolutely sovereign over everything that exists because He created anything that does exist. (Colossians 1:16 ESV) God’s salvation through Jesus Christ is also evidence of the degree to which that sovereignty stretches. Jesus said:

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:44 ESV)

Men and women who fail to see the magnificence and splendor of salvation simply do not comprehend God. They do not understand His preeminence, holiness, love, and grace. The grace imparted in salvation is the sole province of God. We did nothing to deserve that grace but God chose to grant it anyway. God chose to love us before we ever knew Him.

The doctrines of salvation and God’s sovereignty reveal that those who seriously seek salvation do so because God’s grace has prompted them to seek it. Even faith is the gift of God.

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. (John 6:37 ESV)

God has shown His love for us, even while we were unrepentant sinners, by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for our iniquities. (Romans 5:8 ESV) No one will stand justified before God unless it is through Jesus Christ. There is no salvation under any other name but Jesus. (Acts 4:12 ESV) Do you not see the astonishing majesty of the grace and sovereignty of God in providing our means of salvation? In the Scriptures and your new heart, you know the sovereign source of your salvation. It is all of God.
