• Samuel at Gilgal

This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. (Romans 1:21-23 ESV)

Samuel A CainThe natural man is mad. This madness is always within him. His emotions and his thoughts are inclined by his hatred of God. The Bible tells us that men’s hearts are completely wicked and full of self-deception. (Jeremiah 17:9 ESV) His thoughts are continuously sinful. Yet, life is fleeting and time moves all too hastily. We are here for a moment and then like a vapor of mist disappear awaiting the Great Day of Judgement.

It is madness to rebel against God. It is madness to trade God’s blessings for the temporary pleasures of this world. Nevertheless, the world calls Christians mad. There are many who say that it is the Cross of Christ that is madness; the atonement through His blood is madness; grace is madness; heaven and hell are madness; and even that belief in God is madness. They are futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts are darkened. Claiming to be wise, they have become the greatest fools. (Romans 1:21-23 ESV)

In their madness, men claim the right to declare for themselves what is good and evil. They announce to the world that what may be evil for others is not necessarily evil for them. There is no absolute truth because what is true for one may not be true for another. They do not accept moral truth. God is mythologized and every man goes his own way. The concept of Biblical sin and punishment is portrayed as barbaric in our time. Still, sin divides us from God. Its madness corrupts our minds, blinding us to the Way of Truth, and sends us on the path of self-destruction.

Jesus Christ proclaims, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV) Even when people are lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, and sinful, the darkness cannot overcome the light of Christ. (2 Timothy 3:2 ESV) We are renegades against the authority of God. The book of Romans explains that:

“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:9-12 & 23 ESV)

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 ESV) This is a wonderful mystery. God chose to have mercy on us – even when we were His enemies. We were dead in our trespasses and sins. Yet, God chose to save us by His grace. In Ephesians 2:8, Paul explains:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God…”

In Jesus Christ we have redemption through His blood. Out of the riches of His grace, He forgives our sins. (Ephesians 1:7 ESV) The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Therefore, we must walk in the light as He is in the light. (1 John 1:7 ESV) Jesus is the light of the world and those who follow Him have been released from the bonds of madness. Jesus is the way, and the truth, and the life. (John 14:6 ESV) Jesus is the only source of spiritual light (Truth). There are no other paths; no idols, no men, nor demons who/which will give access to the true God and spiritual Truth. He is the Light of the World – this Jesus Christ.
