This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

Emerson On Opportunity

Quoting American essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882):

“America is another name for opportunity. Our whole history appears like a last effort of divine Providence in behalf of the human race.”

One Response

  1. America was born with a purpose, a Divine purpose, for sure. Although she has fulfilled some of her mission, I believe there is more for her to accomplish. To do that, however, Americans must accept the responsibility for the future of the nation. The rapid decline over the last few decades in the morality of Americans (including those involved in religion) must be reversed. It’s not something that you or I can do – except to be accountable for our own behavior, attitudes, and words.
