This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

How One Communist Helped To Rewrite The History Taught In America’s Schools

Howard Zinn Speaking at Marlboro College - 02/...

Howard Zinn

One example of the secular progressives’ attempt to rewrite (distort) American History is Howard Zinn’s book, A People’s History of the United States. The book has been used in high schools and universities more for its propaganda appeal to America’s elite than its historical accuracy. Historian and author John Fea said Zinn’s book “is bad history” and “violates virtually every rule of good historical thinking.” Howard Zinn was also a member of the Communist Party-USA. According to Wes Vernon:

Hate America Howie (HAH) taught a class on “Basic Marxism” at party headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., advising his “students” that the basic teachings of Marx and Lenin “were sound and should be adhered to by those present”; HAH was a pro-Castro activist and backed radical groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Socialist Workers Party (SWP), Progressive Labor Party, and Black Panther Party; supported a Communist victory in Vietnam, visiting the Communist regime in Hanoi (ala “Hanoi Jane” Fonda — who — BTW — paid tribute to Howie upon his departure); in 1962, while President John F. Kennedy warned the Soviets to back off or suffer the consequences, HAH — at his quisling best — publicly protested the U.S. demand for withdrawal of missiles from Cuba. . . .

The guts of HAH’s “history” is that the founders were bad; the people who built the USA and made it the greatest nation on earth — complete with all its blessings — were evil; capitalism is to blame for everything; every war we ever fought including World War II was conducted either for imperialist ends or to cover our hypocrisy. If the 100 million people who were killed by world Communism could speak, they would be puzzled by Hate-America Howie’s affinity for the murderous movement that has stalked the world for decades. . . .

Before Communist Howard Zinn died in January, he was actively spearheading an effort to inject his lying version of American history into the innocent heads of little tots almost as soon as they are able to talk. . . .

Mr. Zinn’s polemic A People’s History of the United States (widely circulated in academia) did not mention that its author had been a dedicated member of the Communist Party USA, whose overall mission included the overthrow of the United States by force and violence (while attempting to achieve the same ends by infiltrating influential American institutions and occupations (such as — well, authoring “history” textbooks). . . .

Forget historical honesty — only the agenda counts

“Even if [objectivity] were possible, it would be undesirable,” he once remarked, “because if you have some kind of social aim, if you think history should serve society in some way; should serve the progress of the human race, then it requires that you make your selection on the basis of what you think will advance the causes of humanity” [even if such selectivity constitutes lying through one’s teeth?]. . . .

The People’s History tells us a lot about Howard Zinn.

Zinn wants our kids to grow up hating America because he says greed has motivated the United States in everything it has done during its relatively short history. These include our revolt against Britain in 1776, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II. All were done for evil profits.

From The Resolutions Of Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards

Quoting Jonathan Edwards:

Resolution 8: Resolved, to act, in all respects, both speaking and doing, as if nobody had been so vile as I, and as if I had committed the same sins, or had the same infirmities or failings as others; and that I will let the knowledge of their failings promote nothing but shame in myself, and prove only an occasion of my confessing my own sins and misery to God.

Resolution 21: Resolved, never to do anything, which if I should see in another, I should count a just occasion to despise him for, or to think any way the more meanly of him.

George Washington On The Conduct Of Americans

George Washington

Quoting George Washington:

“It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself, and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influence may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn.”

Repent And Believe The Gospel

J. C. Ryle

Even true Christians are often doubtful, fearful, faint-hearted, ready to believe they shall not be saved, because of the corrupt nature which they find in their hearts. Jesus knew we would require strong assurance like this provided in the following text. J. C. Ryle writes:

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. (John 10)

Glorious and comfortable things are written in this passage—but remember they are given to Christ’s flock only; I fence it out against all that are unbelieving and impenitent and profane. I warn you plainly, except you will hear the voice of Christ and follow Him, you have no right or portion in this blessed fountain of consolations. . . .

Of whom is the Lord Jesus speaking? Are we to suppose He only has in view patriarchs and prophets and apostles—men like Abraham and David and Job and Daniel, men who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, worked signs and miracles, and shed their blood for the kingdom of God’s sake? Are these the sort of people who alone can take comfort from those blessed words, “I know them . . . . they shall never perish.” Is everyone else to go on doubting to his life’s end? God forbid that I should tell you so! it were doing Satan’s work to preach such doctrine. This text may become the property of the worst of sinners—if he will only hear Christ’s voice and follow Him. . . .

It is for all who repent and believe the Gospel; it is for all who mourn over their past sins with a true godly sorrow, and flee to the Lord Jesus Christ with faith and prayer as their only hope, their all-sufficient Savior, their all in all. There is not one single man or woman of whom it shall not be written in the Lamb’s book of life, “This is one known of God, this is an heir of eternal life, this is a man or a woman that is never to perish, never to be plucked out of the Lord’s hand,” if you will only give up your sins and take Christ Jesus for your Shepherd and Redeemer. Your repentance may seem very faint, your faith may appear weak as water—but if there be so much as a grain of mustard seed, if there be enough to lead you a penitent to the foot of the cross, you shall find yourself one day numbered with the saints in glory everlasting.
