    This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

Prayer And Christianity In American History, Part IV

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth

Beginning in 1904 and continuing for the next half-century, the Federal government printed and distributed The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth for the use of Members of Congress because of the important teachings it contained.

In 1931, Congress by law adopted the Star-Spangled Banner as the official National Anthem, with its phrases such as “may the Heav’n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation,” and “this be our motto, In God is our trust!”.

In 1954, Congress by law added the phrase “one nation under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance.

In 1954 a special Congressional Prayer Room was added to the Capitol with a kneeling bench, an altar, an open Bible, an inspiring stained-glass window with George Washington kneeling in prayer, the declaration of Psalm 16:1: “Preserve me, O God, for in Thee do I put my trust,” and the phrase “This Nation Under God” displayed above the kneeling, prayerful Washington.

In 1956, Congress by law made “In God We Trust” the National Motto, and added the phrase to American currency.

The constitutions of each of the 50 states, either in the preamble or body, explicitly recognize or express gratitude to God.

America’s first Presidential Inauguration incorporated 7 specific religious activities, including–

  1. the use of the Bible to administer the oath;
  2. affirming the religious nature of the oath by the adding the prayer `So help me God!’ to the oath;
  3. inaugural prayers offered by the President;
  4. religious content in the inaugural address;
  5. civil leaders calling the people to prayer or acknowledgment of God;
  6. inaugural worship services attended en masse by Congress as an official part of congressional activities; and
  7. clergy-led inaugural prayers, activities which have been replicated in whole or part by every subsequent President.

One Response

  1. thomas jefferson wrote the life and morals of jesus of nazareth and presented jesus as a good man, but removed every reference to His being God and the Son of God…to deny Christ is sin– and its what the govs of adam do — to replace Christ wit their own brand of morality and religion…how is tha a good thing fa the gov or anyone?

    in god we trust is a statement of fact…not a statement of faith in the True and living God…the god tha adam’s gov worships is the god of this world –satan–not Christ…when Jesus was handed a coin, what did He say? who’s image is this? it was caesar’s image then and its caesar’s image now…but Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God and God, is the image of God and not the image of caesar…

    swearin on the bible and usin the words so help me God goes against the very words IN the bible…when Jesus said, swear no oaths and take no vows cuz heaven is God’s throne and earth is His footstool so what can u swear on? how is it faithful to deny Christ again by doing what He commands against?

    Jesus tells us to pray ‘in our prayer closet’ not to be seen of men and God will reward openly…a man who prays before men gets his reward from men, and not from God, cuz they are seen by men and already received their reward and wont have a reward from the Father…

    a big show of worship services attended by men and women who live after the flesh and by the rudiments of this world isnt a show of faith in the living and true Christ of God…and they gonna reap corruption fa not walking after the Spirit…a man who walks after the Spirit cant also be involved in civilian affairs, since he has ONE KING and that King is Jesus Christ…no man can serve 2 masters…

    how sad tha these things — the very things against which Jesus Christ speaks — are the things which ppl believe make usa a christian nation…but the nation which denies Christ — as usa gov and country does in every step of the way — isnt of Christ…

    the true nation of God is the church tha Jesus Christ raised up and is building up, and the gates of hell — including all the govs of adam — will not prevail against her…
