“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18, ESV)
John MacArthur once wrote, “Within marriage, sex is beautiful, fulfilling, creative. Outside of marriage, it is ugly, destructive, and damning.” What are Christian parents to do in a culture that has embraced a perversion of sexuality and marriage that mocks the Word of God? Our culture promotes the belief that marriage is unnecessary and sex is a situational personal choice not governed by God or any absolute moral standard. Promiscuous behavior and deviant forms of sex are acceptable societal norms. Sexual sins have become man’s declaration of independence from God. There are no boundaries or restraints in the new culture of sexual chaos.
The media has been an integral part of promoting an unrestricted sexual lifestyle in modern culture. It fantasizes the pleasures but never reveals the true-to-life consequences that result from chasing the desires of immoral behavior. Immature teenagers, young adults, and older adults increasingly accept the fictional, glamorized Hollywood portrayal of loose sex and self-gratification with uncritical minds. Heterosexual sex, which God designed to take place within the covenant relationship of marriage, has now been twisted and distorted from an exclusive expression of love to one of promiscuous lust.
Such a lifestyle of sin opposes God’s perfect will that we should strive to be pure in body, heart, and mind. The disaster of deviating from Christian morality has led our country to achieve the highest teen pregnancy and divorce rates in the world. We have reached the pinnacle of the civilized world’s rates of sexually transmitted diseases. Harvard researcher, Edward C. Green, believes the public health establishment refuses to recognize the obvious in assessing AIDS prevention methods because it fears endorsing religious moral values related to abstinence and faithfulness. We are the rape capital of the industrialized world. The decline of Christianity in our culture has made us the largest producer and consumer of porn. One-third of all the children born in our country are born into an unstable home environment where the natural mother and father have not made a commitment to lifelong marriage.
The secular assault to drive Christian moral teachings out of our cultural attitudes concerning sex and marriage in the United States has only served to destabilize the foundation of our civilization. The committed family unit, which preserves a civil society, has been sacrificed on the altar of a false, unmerciful god – the god of pleasure.
The absolute moral standards of our Creator are unavoidable. You may deny them or reject them but they are designed into the very fabric of the reality in which we exist. The consequences cannot be escaped. Our culture’s effort to define sexuality outside of God’s perfect design is destroying our souls and the soul of this nation.
