Christian Art?

According to R.C. Sproul:

“What makes art Christian art? Is it simply Christian artists painting biblical subjects like Jeremiah? Or, by attaching a halo, does that suddenly make something Christian art? Must the artist’s subject be religious to be Christian? I don’t think so. There is a certain sense in which art is its own justification. If art is good art, if it is true art, if it is beautiful art, then it is bearing witness to the Author of the good, the true, and the beautiful.” (Lifeviews)

  1. i agree with this quote, because a lot of “Christian” art is nothing more than graven images that God Warns us to stay away from

    • What makes the difference between Christian art (i.e. art with Christian subjects) and “graven images”? The artist’s intent? The subject itself?

      • i think the artist intent, if they do it to glorify themselves instead of God and some people seem to think they need visuals to worships based on some churches i visited

  2. Good discussion! I think of really good art as being a product of the artist in which God is glorified for the “good” and “righteous” beauty which He imparts to the earth, nature, and man in His mercy.
