The Race Card Is Maxed Out

Jonah Goldberg

“Corruption is almost inevitable when any politician — black or white — is given a job for life.”

From the desk of Jonah Goldberg:

“The race card is maxed out.”

That was the punch line for a recent hilarious exchange on “The Daily Show” in which Larry Wilmore, the faux news program’s “senior black correspondent,” reported that the race card is not only over its credit limit but is in fact “void during a black presidency.” This discovery came in the wake of Maxine Waters’ allegation that her political problems stem from a racially biased congressional ethics investigation.

Wilmore said he should have seen this coming, given that “the Congressional Black Caucus has been overusing the race card for years.” Like when it circled the wagons around Rep. William Jefferson. The CBC in effect argued it’d be no big deal if a white congressman had been videotaped receiving a $100,000 bribe and if the FBI then found most of it in his freezer. Singling out a black congressman for this sort of thing, Wilmore jokes, amounts to punishing Jefferson for “Legislating While Black.”

Of course, Wilmore (a great comic talent) is joking, but not everyone is laughing.

Faith Is Difficult

Faith is difficult. Yet, faith is the gift and language of God. Faith is facing the difficult things of life and trusting in the will of an almighty God. The lyrics of the Psalms remind us to have faith in God. It is a message that is woven throughout the texts of the Old and New Testaments. It is the humble confidence that “God will provide.”

God provides. He’s generous beyond belief. Daily, He cares for us. Whether we are in times of plenty or times of want, our God gives us what we need for the day. Faith, however, remains difficult because we are not always aware of God’s presence or His provision. Worry and anxiety are so natural to us that we easily forget to simply “trust and obey”.

Think about God’s promise of provision for forgiveness and the cleansing of our sin. Keep in mind God’s promise of a new covenant of grace. Over the centuries, God promised in the Scriptures to provide a Savior to rid our world of sin’s judgment and curse. Abraham and Sarah were chosen to parent a nation from whom the Messiah would be born. God sent prophets to announce the coming of the Messiah. The Law of Moses pointed ahead to the One who would fulfill it. The Temple sacrifices pointed to the blood of the lamb that would, once and for all, take away the sin of the world.

Jesus Christ was sent by the Father to offer himself in death for the sins of God’s people. Jesus took upon himself our human nature in order to take on our sin. He became cursed for us. He suffered for us. He died for us. Now, no more work is needed. The endless rituals and sacrifices come to an end.

God provides. He is sovereign over all. Not one molecule in the universe is outside His absolute control. He provides what we need for today and He provides what we need for eternity.

Do you have faith in God’s provision? If you trust Him with your soul, do you trust Him with your life? Do you understand that if He can provide for your salvation from sin, He can also provide for your daily needs? Faith is difficult, but it is only by faith in Jesus Christ that we can truly live in this fallen world. It is only by faith in Jesus Christ that we have hope in the eternal world to come.
