Will President Obama Apologize To The Germans For World War II?

After The Bombing At Dresden
President Obama is planning a trip to Germany in the first week in June. It is to precede Obama’s June 6 participation in ceremonies in France marking the 65th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy.
Obama planning a trip to Germany in connection with the anniversary of the Normandy invasion seems strange. But where exactly in Germany is President Obama headed? German reports suggest that Obama’s primary German destination will be Dresden. Representatives of the German and American governments met in Dresden recently to discuss the visit. A public speech is expected.
A visit to Dresden by the American president is an absolutely unmistakable symbol for the German public. Dresden is the symbol bar none of German suffering at the hands of the Allies to the people of Germany. The city was heavily bombed by British and American air forces in February 1945. According to estimates, anywhere from 18,000 to at most 25,000 persons died in the attacks. The bombing of Dresden is commonly described as a “war crime” in German discussions.
So, the question of the moment – in the hearts of many families with World War II veterans – is, “Will President Obama now apologize for the strategies used to win World War II?”

I saw your headline on this post and had to smile inwardly while thinking to myself …so it’s not just me.
With the constant “America is evil” bashing that our current president is doing it wouldn’t really be unrealistic to anticipate–yet another–apology from Obama on behalf of our country.
Great post!

Of course Obama will apologize for WW2. He’ll also compare what was done to Dresden to what the Nazis did in the Holocaust in an effort to show that the two were the same and to diminish Israel and Judaism. It’s the only way he can continue to appease the Muslims.
He’ll also manage, in his “nuanced” way, to draw a parallel between Dresden, the Holocaust, and what Bush – it’s always Bush – did to Iraq.
Remember, Obama never saw or read of an American thought, word, or deed that he didn’t despise.
Why would it be wrong for him to apologise jonolan. My family passed through Dresden whilst fleeing from the Soviets three days before the attack. My grandfather remained behind and survived. You cannot look at this as some sort of appeasement to Muslims. Is murder wrong? Then be big enough to admit it as nation. The Germans have certainly had to face up to their past. Shouldn’t the Allies do the same. After all Stalin murdered 20 million of his own people, but there is not a huge effort to villify him, the Soviets, or ban the hammer and sickle. The Allies were motivated by revenge and did something evil. There was no military benefit to the bombing, and this was purely gratuitous murder. The parallel between Dresden and the Holocaust is based on the evil in men’s heart towards other men. You cannot measure by numbers. It is not some sort of failure to admit that the Americans and British perpetrated a crime in Dresden. I can say this as I represent both sides. My father was a British soldier and my mother a refugee from Silesia. I have nothing to protect but honesty.
Oh and by the way, my Grandfather was one of most dedicated Christians you could ever meet!
Thank you, Peter, for your wonderful insight and objective Christian compassion. I prefer to believe that President Obama is on the right track. If this country made a mistake or makes a mistake in the future that’s hurts others, WHY NOT APOLOGIZE? Thank you for not letting your politics get in the way of your Christian faith. Wasn’t this country founded on the two being separate?
willnevergiveup and jonolan: Shame on you!
