U.N. Plans To Stop Christians From Criticizing Islam

From: The Desk of Steven Groves

For the past several years, the United Nations Human Rights Council and General Assembly have adopted resolutions recognizing and promoting the concept of “defamation of religions.” Proponents seek to establish an international ban on any speech that would insult, criticize, offend, or disparage any person’s religion. Specifically, the Organization of the Islamic Conference has suggested that national legislatures pass laws to ensure protection against “defamation of religions.”

Such a ban, however, could not withstand legal scrutiny in the United States. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects free speech and expression, even when speech is offensive or insulting. Moreover, a religious “speech code” would disrupt the assimilation of religious minorities that has occurred throughout U.S. history and could breed resentment rather than understanding among America’s religious communities.

The U.S. government has spoken out strongly against the “defamation of religions” effort at the United Nations. The next U.S. Administration should oppose the further promulgation of “defamation of religions” at the U.N. and must resist any attempt to legitimize the concept within the United States. . . .

A Moment With Charles Spurgeon

If we could see things as they are-if we were not deceived by the masquerade of this feeble life-if we were not so easily taken in by the masks and dresses of those who act in this great drama, be it comedy or tragedy-if we could but see what men and women are behind the scenes, penetrate their hearts, watch their inner motions, and discern their secret feelings, we would find only a few who could bear the name of “blessed.”

John Dickinson: America Enlightened By The Gospel

John Dickinson

John Dickinson

“[Governments] could not give the rights essential to happiness… We claim them from a higher source: from the King of kings, and Lord of all the earth.

“Rendering thanks to my Creator for my existence and station among His works, for my birth in a country enlightened by the Gospel and enjoying freedom, and for all His other kindnesses, to Him I resign myself, humbly confiding in His goodness and in His mercy through Jesus Christ for the events of eternity.” (Signer of the Constitution, General in the American Revolution)

Washington State Capital Allows Anti-Christian Sign Next To Nativity Scene

Atheist in Olympia, Washington have unveiled an anti-Christian placard in the state Capitol next to a nativity-scene_webChristian Nativity scene. The placard, sponsored by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, says – in part – “There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

Since the Nativity scene is only a symbol with no written explanation, some are asking why the Atheists were allowed to display a placard attacking religious belief in writing. Many are justly offended by the blatant attack on their faith.

FOX News reports:

“On Monday, the Nativity scene and atheist sign were installed alongside each other in a hallway between the state Senate and House chambers, separated by a large bust of the state’s namesake, George Washington. . . .”

It is interesting that the two displays are separated by a bust of George Washington. Perhaps we might glean some insight into how he would understand this conflict from his personal writings. Here is a portion of one of Washington’s personal prayers:freedomfromreligionbillboardp1

“O Most Glorious God, in Jesus Christ, my merciful and loving Father; I acknowledge and confess my guilt in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day. I have called on Thee for pardon and forgiveness of my sins, but so coldly and carelessly that my prayers are become my sin, and they stand in need of pardon.

“I have sinned against heaven and before Thee in thought, word, and deed. I have contemned Thy majesty and holy laws. I have likewise sinned by omitting what I ought to have done and committing what I ought not. I have rebelled against the light, despising Thy mercies and judgment, and broken my vows and promise. I have neglected the better things. My iniquities are multiplied and my sins are very great. I confess them, O Lord, with shame and sorrow, detestation and loathing and desire to be vile in my own eyes as I have rendered myself vile in Thine. I humbly beseech Thee to be merciful to me in the free pardon of my sins for the sake of Thy dear Son and only Savior Jesus Christ who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me.

“Make me to know what is acceptable in Thy sight, and therein to delight, open the eyes of my understanding, and help me thoroughly to examine myself concerning my knowledge, faith, and repentance, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object, Jesus Christ the Way, the Truth, and the Life. . . .” (from a 24 page authentic handwritten manuscript book dated April 21-23, 1752)

Washington, like most of the Founding Fathers, were deeply committed to a Christian worldview. Now let me ask you. Do you think the Freedom From Religion Foundation would have dared put that placard up next to a Muslim display for a religious holiday? Wake up Christians. God will not be mocked.

Support A Two Month Tax Holiday

incometaxbreakHow would you like to have a two month tax holiday in 2009? Representative Louie Gohmert (Republican, Texas) has proposed this very thing as an alternative to continuing the bailout plan. The amount of money being handed out in the big bailout scheme is large enough to give every working American a two month tax holiday.

According to former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich:

For the $350 billion second bailout installment Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is going to request, every American taxpayer could have a two-month tax holiday from both income tax and the Social Security-Medicare (FICA) tax.

That means that for all of January and all of February you would pay no federal income tax and no FICA tax, which — for most Americans — amounts to about 33 percent of your gross income. . . .

As a pro-small business, pro-jobs creation, pro-market stimulation measure, imagine the power of that much extra money in the hands of the American workers and the American entrepreneur. . . .

The Gohmert plan is a plan to get America growing again. It is not a bailout plan. It is an economic growth plan.

If you think a two-month income tax holiday is a good idea, sign the petition today! Human Events and its sister website RedState are fighting to get Representative Louie Gohmert’s income tax break proposal enacted. This would save the typical American family around $2,000. It makes more sense for you to keep your money rather than throwing $350 million at bailout programs that don’t help the American people.

Let’s stop the bailout by supporting Louie Gohmert’s plan.

Foolishness

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” (Psalm 14:1)

Have you ever considered this? More and more people seem to be living with the attitude that there is no God. They deny God with the motivation that they may escape any accountability to God. The psalmist very bluntly calls these people “fools.”pity-the-fool

The psalmist is saying that, “Anyone (high IQ or not) who does not believe in God is a fool.” The Bible describes a fool as one without understanding. They are without understanding because they listen to their senses and desires instead of listening to God. Man, in order to do as he wishes, says “there is no God.” This is foolish because he has given up his understanding in order to follow his desires and senses. Being a fool does not require low intelligence. The failure of men and women to follow God has nothing to do with knowledge and intelligence.

Some people believe it is clever and modern to say you do not believe in God. It is as if there is an automatic association to being an intellectual with disbelief in God. Some treat atheism as if it were a Ph.D. awarded by a university. This is their rite of passage into the fellowship of the intellectual elite. But fools do not think things through. Their passions and desires drive them to jump to wrong conclusions. They are fools because they are willing to risk the wrath of God and their eternal souls. A life of popularity in the world seems so very glamorous that they do not consider what comes after the moment. Thus they foolishly miss a greater pleasure than these.

Acknowledge your foolishness to God. Ask Him for forgiveness. He will freely forgive you if you come to Him with a repentant heart.
