The DNC May Be A DUD: Can Obama Bring It To Life?

The old time politics of liberal Marxism is not dead; the true believers have simply changed their name to progressives (Democrats) and are meeting in Denver this week. During an election year about change, we seem to be seeing more of the same old thing. Barack Obama has selected Senator Joseph Biden as his running mate, but Biden has 36 years in the Senate. Doesn’t this make him an insider? Is this change? Obama, the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, according to the National Journal, has picked the third-most-liberal senator as his vice-president.

The Democratic convention is like “déjà vu.” Hillary Clinton speaks. Bill Clinton speaks. As usual, the Clintons are all about the Clintons. When Michelle Obama speaks at the convention, she says “All of us are driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do-that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be. That is the thread that connects our hearts. That is the thread that runs through my journey and Barack’s journey and so many other improbable journeys that have brought us here tonight, where the current of history meets this new tide of hope. That is why I love this country.” What in the world does that mean?

Carter who clearly represents the old-line liberal politics and was possibly the worst president of the 20th century. Carter, speaking of Obama’s candidacy, said “I think it already has sent a wave of approbation and admiration in many countries around the world just knowing that this black boy who grew with just a loving mother and grandparents and that was about all he had to start with, has now had a chance to become the nominee of the Democratic Party for President… I don’t think there’s any doubt that there’s a spirit and a bright new hope for America within this country and around the world, and if Obama is elected, which I think he is going to be, then I think that will be the transforming grace for the end of racism and prejudice and hatred between races in this country.” According to this logic, people must vote for Obama to prove they are not racist anymore. If there is a real message of change and how it will be accomplished in this convention, they are doing a good job of hiding it somewhere.

All hope of making sense of this carnival now lies in the hands of Barack Obama. His speech Thursday night will be his last best chance to rescue the Democratic National Convention from the mediocrity of “politics-as-usual.” Will he rally voters around a real plan for real change that really improves our lives or will he continue to rally people around the cult of his personality and rhetoric? I bet I know and you do too!
